By investigating situations in which caregivers attend to the elderly at home, this study clarifies the inconveniences experienced by both caregivers and the elderly in regard to home healthcare equipment and the home healthcare environment. Emphasis is placed on the problems caused by the inappropriateness of home healthcare equipment. The objectives of this study are as follows : 1) to establish guidelines for designing environments and equip-ment for the home healthcare of the elderly in order to reduce the workload and increase the efficiency of caregivers and help the elderly become more independent and improve their quality of life, and 2) to provide the above guidelines for the information of caregivers and the designers of home healthcare equipment.
