Abstract
The Hokkaido Shinkansen, which runs between Tokyo and Sapporo in four hours, will be in operation in 2020. The E5 series trains are now expected to be applied for the Hokkaido Shinkansen. In this study, we verified new external design of train suitable for the Hokkaido Shinkansen. We proposed three trains which have different color and headlight postion from the original E5 series trains. According to the evaluation using the semantic differential (SD) method, their proposals achieved to make a better impression than the original. This suggests that the aesthetic quality of train can be improved by considering its color and headlight position, while the train shape is uniform.
