Abstract
Edward Johnston was an outstanding calligrapher and his designed UD alphabet had high evaluation for san serif type. He also contributed to design type font for private press, the Cranach press in Germany. The concept of his calligraphy method is based upon the same discipline as type design such as UD alphabet and the Cranach press fonts. Johnston involved in   calligraphy and type design and which derived from the idea of the Art and Craft Movement. This study is discussed how Johnston developed calligraphy and how it influenced to the world and how he fined out an ideal type design.
