Design analysis of bus route maps in Fukuoka city:

Variations and trends from creator and user point of view through dimension style chart.

This paper investigates route map design within the bus network in a large city. With the case study was route maps on bus stops in Fukuoka City. From 105 route map samples, 23 design variations were found, classified by separating them through several categories and creating a four-quadrant style dimension chart (Text-Diagram dimension and Matrix-Freeform dimension). From plotting these designs variation on the chart, it was found that the ease of creation for the creator and ease of access for the user tended not to match. Further research will be carried out to examine what would be effective for route maps on a large bus network.
