Citizen science has the potential for new intellectual production by citizens, but the foundation for such research activities is vulnerable. To resolve this vulnerability and to achieve science education research that includes Citizen Science as an intellectual production activity by citizens, it is essential to describe the practice of Citizen Science in the context of science education research, but there are few descriptions in this context. In this study, for providing a resource for considering science education research that includes citizen science activities, I describe the author’s difficulties in practicing research activities in the science education research context as a citizen scientist and how I coped with them. Through this study, difficulties due to factors such as “access to research resources,” “choice of research topics and methods,” “research funding,” and “connection with research community and academic credentials” are described. Also, it is described how the author tries to cope with these difficulties, such as choosing accessible research topics, utilizing open resources, applying for grants that are available regardless of affiliation, interacting with online communities, and acquiring a research fellowship at a university.
