The object of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of Total Organic Chloride (TOCl) formation from organic compounds by aqueous chlorination. Fifty-eight selected organics were chlorinated at following conditions : pH7.0, temperature 20°C, reaction period 24 hrs, chlorine dose 0. 4mM, TOC 7.2mg/l. After reaction of chlorine and organics for 24hrs, TOCl, chloroform and consumed chlorine were mesured.
The results of the experiments are as follows :
(1) The order of TOCl yield of aliphatic organics is acetone dicarboxylic acids, acetylacetone and ethyl acetoacetate. The ratio of chloroform to TOCl from acetylacetone, acetone dicarboxylic acid and ethyl acetoacetate were 85%, 50%, 0.5%, respectively.
(2) The TOCl yield from aromatic organics are higher those of aliphatic organics, however the ratio of chloroform to TOCl are less than those of aliphatic organics, in general.
(3) Fifty-eight selected organics are classified into three groups from group I to III by cluster analysis from the results of the experiments.
(4) The organics in natural waters are assumed to be between group II and group III.
