The photocatalytic effect of titanium dioxide (anatase type) on the decomposition of chlorophenols was evaluated. Aqueous chlorophenol solutions were irradiated in the presence of photocatalyst with a 500W Xenon-lamp both directly and through pyrex 7740 filter. The other experimental conditions were as follows : the initial concentration of chlorophenol 25mg/l, the concentration of photocatalyst 50mg/l, temperature 40°C.
The following results were obtained.
1) The rate of chlorophenol decomposition increases remarkably in the presence of photocatalyst. Titanium dioxide doped with copper is more effective photocatalyst than undoped one. Chlorophenol is dechlorinated completely during 3hr irradiation.
2) Under solar simulated irradiation, chlorophenols decompose appreciably in the presence of photocatalyst.
3) The intermediate products of the photocatalytic decomposition of o-chlorophenol are mainly chlorohydroquinone and hydroxyhydroquinone.
