The simulation studies on the treatment of municipal sewage by the activated sludge processes and the characteristics of the produced sludges have been conducted using newly proposed kinetic model.
The production of exess sludge in the conventional process is discussed using three types of influent quality. The mass of excess sludge is largely different according to S-COD/T-COD in influent, even if the activated sludge and the T-COD concentrations are fixed. Under the influent of low S-COD/T-COD, it is possible to reduce the mass of excess sludge by raising the activated sludge P-COD concentration up to about 3, 000mg/l to promote the metabolism of particle substrate.
Supposing the treatment of the same sewage by six types of the activated sludge processes, the biosorption process and the total oxidation process can mineralize the organic materials more effectively and produce the sludge of lower RNA/DNA in comparison with the conventional process, the step aeration process and the high-rate high-loading process. On the other hand, in the modified aeration process, the mineralization efficiency of organic materials is very low and RNA/DNA of the sludge is relatively high. However, judging from RNA/P-COD content, the biosorption process, the total oxidation process and the modified aeration process make a group and the others make another one.
