Wood characteristices and kraft pulp properties from eleven kinds of hardwood grown in Hokkaido were examined, and then the correlation between the properties of woods and their pulps were studied.
The results were as followes :
1) Specific gravity of woods correlated with lignin content (+) * and holocellulose content (-), and besides correlated with fiber width (-), lumen width (-), and the ratio of fiber width to lumen width (-).
2) Pentsan and α-cellulose content in pulp were correlated with their content in wood (+) respectively, therefore the chemical properties of pulp may be inferred by the results of chemical analysis of wood.
3) The yield of pulp was strongly correlated with α-cellulose content in the wood (+).
4) Important factors affecting on the breaking length and burst strength of pulp-sheet were the fiber length (+) and the ratio of fiber width to lumen width (+), and the former was slightly more importand than the latter. Also the tear strength was most affected by fiber length (+).
5) Sheet-density was found to be correlated with the ratio of fiber width to lumen width (+) and pentsan content (+). And breaking length and burst strength were primarily correlated with the density (+). But tear strength is most affected by fiber length (+), then the density.
6) Correlation between 0-span breaking length and pulp-sheet strength was found to be relatively slight.
* Sign indicates whether relationship is positive (+) or negative (-)
