We isolated and established a pure monolayer culture of bovine oviduct epithelial cells. The cells could be serially subcultivated for several generations in medium DME/F12 supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum when the culture substrate were coated with Type I collagen. The epithelial cells, after the several subcultivations, were characterized by immunocytochemical staining of intermediate filament proteins. The cell growth of these cells was enhanced by epidermal growth factor (EGF) in a dose dependent manner and serum also had a proliferative effect in addition to EGF. While transforming growth factor-β1, (TGF-β1) alone did not affect the cell proliferation of these oviduct epithelial cells, TGF-β1, exerted a strong antiproliferative effect on that induced by EGF and serum. The bovine oviduct epithelial cell culture system is a good model to characterize the effect of hormones and growth factors on these cell proliferation and function.
