The presence of pestiviruses contaminating in cell cultures is well known. We describe a sequential protocol for reverse transcription and polymerase chain reaction to detect ribonucleic acids of pestiviruses in cell cultures. We used two sets of universal primers to amplify complementary deoxyribonucleic acids of major viral species of the genus Pestivirus. Using this assay, we demonstrated seven mammalian cell lines, CPA, CPAE, EBTr, HH, CKT-1, CRFK, and Vero, were contaminated with the virus.
