Damage by fascioliasis among cattle is very extensive, although we can, at present, only guess the extent of such damage.
It is difficult to give the precise amount of damage by fascioliasis, but generally we can point out serious influences on the economy of our life, such as lowering of the working power of oxen, decline in the quality of meat, and decrease in the production of milk.
From 1956 to 1958, at the slaughterhouse in Higashimatsuyama, Saitama Prefecture, we examined how seriously cattle for meat were affected with fascioliasis, by weighing portions of the liver condemned on account of fascioliasis.
The results of investigation are as follows.
1) Of 5, 900 cattle slaughtered in Higashimatsuyama, 4, 200 were found infected with fascioliasis. The infection rate was 68.1 per cent.
2) The total amount of livers inspected was 3, 925, 900kg, of which 1, 120, 000kg (38.1 per cent) were condemned due to fascioliasis.
3) Fascioliasis was so serious in 16.3 per cent of all the slaughtered cattle that the whole liver was useless for food in them.
