Abstract
six chin, or Japanese spaniel, dogs of the same family line 1-4 years old belonging to three consecutive generations were examined ophthalmologically. All of them were affected with cataract of both eyes. The persistent arteria hyaloidea was seen in 3 eyes of 2 dogs of the second generation. Total ablatio retinae was observed in 3 eyes of 2 dogs of the second generation. Generalized progressive retinal atrophy was noticed in 9 eyes of 5 dogs
It was interpreted that cataract and generalized progressive retinal atrophy might have appeared as dominant hereditary characters in most of the dogs studied and were complicated with the persistent arteria hyaloidea in some dogs, and that all the dogs involved might have belonged to a family line rarely encountered.
