Abstract
A single daily dose of 400 or 800 mg of ampicillin, synthetic penicillin, in tablet, from was added to substitute milk and administered to 31 suckling calves weighing about 70kg for 2-5 days. On the other hand, a single daily dose of 8 or 16 mlof oil containing 50 mg/mlof ampicillin was administered to 30 similar calves in the same manner.
All the calves had been proved clinically or bacteriologically to be affected with microbial diarrhea.
As a result, the calves given tablets showed a recovery rate of 96.8%, and those given the oil a rate of 90%. No side-effects of ampicillin were observed in any calf.
Six strains ofEscherichia coliand 2 Salmonella strains were sensitive to ampicillin when tested.
