A total of 2, 195 swine, or 24.5% of the porcine population on 64 farms, were involved in an outbreak of swine influenza over a period from April to July, 1978. Virus isolated from 4 of them was identified serologically as swine influenza virus.
No swine had been positive for antibody on these farms before the outbreak. A survey conducted over a period from June to September, 1978, revealed thatantibodypositive swine were scattered extensively all over Shimane Prefecture. In January, 1979, the antibody positive rate was 1% among swine shipped from these farms to the slaughterhouse.
