Abstract
Two pregnant sows with watery diarrhoea died suddenly, one after the other, just before delivery on a swine farm in Hiroshima Prefecture in February, 1988. Salmonella (S.) lockleaze belonging to biobar I and 0-7 group of Salmonella was isolated significantly from these carcasses as a causative agent. No virus was isolated from these materials. In the bacteriological examination of rectal swabs of 223 sows from this farm, three carriers of S. lockleaze, including one case with diarrhoea, were revealed, and S. derby and S. londonwere each separately detected in two and S. anatum was detected in other two apparently healthy sows. No prasmids associating with their pathogenicity were detected from S. lockleaze. This is the first report on the isolation of S. lockleaze in Japan.
