Wind noise is caused by the turbulence around the body of a car, when it runs at high speed. Though the wind noise is produced from several regions on the body, its generation mechanism is scarcely investigated except for the one behind the A-pillar. In recent years, the wind noise at the front end is receiving special attention because the engine noise etc. has decreased very much.
The generation mechanism of the wind noise from the front end has been investigated and reported here. The flow pattern is visualized by an open-type single-return water tunnel with aluminum tracers and a 2-dimensional model. The experimental results show that the vortices generated at the front end collide with the edge of the hood, which is thought to correlate with the wind noise.
