1. The number of diatom cells increases from 102 to 106 to the liter from st. 2 toward st. 19 on the N-line. The community of this area indicates that this water has originated from the Bering Sea or from its neighbourhood and is hardly affected by the Kuroshio and neritic waters.
2. The cell number is 102 to 103 between stations 20 and 25 on the N-line. And the warm-water species in this water seems to have been contained in the northward current along the coast of North America.
3. The cell number is very small, less than 102, between stations 29 and 49 on the S-line. Rhizosolenia styliformis is most prevalent. 4. The cell number is 102 to 105 at coast-al stations 1, 26, 27, 28, 50 and 51 and their community is characteristic of neritic water.
Acknowledgements-The author expresses his hearty thanks to Dr. Y.Matsue and Dr. Y.Fuji for their suggestion and encouragement and to Dr. Y.Ichiye and Dr. K.Yosida for their kind advice on ocean currents. Thanks are also due to the members of the observing staff of the Nihon-maru and the Tenyo-maru, by whom valuable plankton samples were collected.
