The present article attempts to show that important portions of the internal density field in the ocean may be caused by the wind-stresses, dealing with a theoretical model on the time-mean circulation in the interior of the ocean. Instead of obtaining a complete solution of the problem, we prescribe the basic density stratification and examine the perturbed density field and the associated velocity field produced by prescribed density and wind-stress distributions at the surface. The numerical results agree remarkably with the observed distribution of density and pressure (surface dynamic topography and subsurface geostrophic flow) in the real oceans. The result seems to suggest that the barotropic response of the wind-driven currents as well as the predominance of thermohaline currents even in the upper layer as has been asserted by TAKANO are unlikely.
