The velocity field of particles developed in a funnel-flow hopper during discharge was investigated. The initially formed flow region at the outlet propagated upwards, expanding its size as the flow developed. The boundary between the flow region and the dead region consisted of the theoretical slip line. The expansion of particles bed with increase of void fraction was suggested in the boundary region. It was found that the particles descend with discontinuity in velocity and that the discontinuous points coincide with the theoretical velocity characteristics.
