The purpose of this study was to investigate the related factor of pain after McLaughlin's method for rotator cuff tears. We evaluated 31 shoulders of 31 patients (15men, 16women, mean age 68years old). The average duration from the onset of symptom to visiting a hospital was 21 weeks (range 4-72 weeks). 16 cases had a history of minor trauma. 5 cases had shoulder contractures and 6 cases had brachialgia before surgery. After surgery, either the airplane type or airbag was used. The subjects were diveded into 2 groups according to the degree of pain immediately after surgery and the final outcome. Pain was measured according to the amount of analgesics. Each parameter was compared between the 2 groups. The cases with small tear, shoulder contracture and brachialgia had severe pain after surgery and these factors had significant difference between the 2 groups. We recommend pain control and relaxation fully before surgery for these cases.
