Background: Clinical outcomes of suture bridge technique compared with double row technique in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) are still been controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes and rotator cuff integrity after ARCR between suture bridge technique (SB) and double row technique (DR).
Methods: In this study, 43 cases of moderate to large rotator cuff tears were treated by either SB (16 cases) or DR method (27 cases). The mean age of all cases was 63.5 years old ranging from 41 to 82 years old. At a mean follow-up of 12 months the clinical results of both groups were compared by means of the JOA scores.
Results: JOA scores had improved from 63.6 points preoperatively to 86.9 points postoperatively in SB group and from 63.9 points preoperatively to 89.9 points postoperatively in DR group without significant difference between the groups. No statistical differences in total shoulder score, pain, strength and function were observed between the groups. During the follow-up, an anchor failure occurred in one case in SB group and required revision surgery. The rate of successful repair evaluated by postoperative MRI was 88% in SB group and 78% in DR group. The subacromial effusion was found in 38% of SB group and 52% of DR group at the follow-up.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study showed that SB for the moderate to large rotator cuff tear had equal clinical results to DR and had better morphological recovery.
