This study analyzed how examples of “coherent utterances” are presented in the “Examples of Language Activities” sections of the English Courses of Study for elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. The study found that, as with examples of “coherent texts,” it is desirable to present them in the format “a text genre + a text format.” This format helps teachers adopt Genre-Based Language Pedagogy. Through this approach, teachers can steadily develop their learners’ abilities to comprehend and produce coherent utterances. The study also argued for combining a single text genre with a single text format, rather than presenting multiple text genres and text formats together in a single exemplary language activity. This provides a specific example of a text. The Commentaries can then explain the text’s typical organization, content, and language features. Additionally, when language activities involve integrated tasks, it is useful to create new labels for skill integration, such as “listening and writing” or “speaking and writing.” Those texts for integrated tasks should also be presented in the format “a text genre + a text format.”
