This paper uses case studies of the Korean production system at three automobile companies and six assembly plants to examine how it developed and its characteristics in comparison to the Japanese production system. The case studies focus particularly on the strategy of development in the corporate system and production management (IE, Quality control) in the manufacturing system. The paper then explores consistencies and contrasts within and across the three companies and six factories to analyze the development trajectories and characteristics of the Korean production system. Central to this analysis is the idea that successful development system in the Korean automobile industry is not confined to one style. This includes "type A", the National type, which differs somewhat from "type B", the International type, when it comes to how to treat Korean traditional social factors and to manage technologies in the production system. The former is oriented forwards the national indigenous development in the corporate system, making good use of Korean economic, social, technical conditions, as well as mechanic and organic characteristics in the manufacturing system. The latter is oriented forwards the international standard system (Japanese production system, JIT/TQC), which excludes the Korean traditional social system. However this type is a hybrid production system which does, to a certain extent, incorporate Korean economic, social, and technical limits.
