The purpose of this study was to clarify the support needed by home care nurses for terminally ill cancer residents and to examine issues for developing a peer support program for home care nurses caring for terminally ill cancer residents. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 home care nurses who had experience caring for terminally ill cancer residents at home. The results were qualitatively and inductively analyzed. The results showed that home care nurses needed four types of support, including “guaranteed opportunities to reflect on end-of-life care”, “support to improve the quality of end-of-life care”, “the creation of a team to support end-of-life care” and “supporting end-of-life nurses to maintain their self-efficacy”. The contents of the peer support program to home care nurses for terminally ill cancer residents should include support from both professional nurses and certified nurses and self-support for individual home care nurses. We also should take into consideration the ease of participation in learning opportunities, including securing time for continuous learning, mental capacity for learning, and access to information. The program should be designed such that participants can easily take part in learning opportunities, including access to information.
