When a precombustion chamber type Diesel engine was operated under light loads and at low speeds, ignition flames were observed generating in the main combustion chamber in several stages (during each injection period). The authors, by means of inserting an optical fiber probe into the combustion chamber, investigated the real state and cause of the phenomena, and confirmed a number of spectra existing in those flames.
