Rippling failure occurring on rollers and gears is well known as one of the phenomena resulting from plastic flow of the surface layer caused by repeated sliding-rolling contact. In the previous paper, the authors reported on rippling failure occurring on gear tooth surfaces under slow speed and heavy load operations. In the case of gears, rippling failure may be influenced by factors such as the load distribution, dynamic load, and the sliding velocity and specific sliding which change with the meshing position on the gear tooth. Therefore, the rippling test by rollers was carried out as basic research for clarification of rippling failure by using the Amsler type abrasion testing machine. In the present paper, the progress and limit of rippling failure occurring on case-hardened roller surfaces are clarified.
