Since 2001, clubroot of Japanese radish (Raphanus sativus L. var hortensis Baker., daikon group) caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae Woronin has been observed in Fukushima, Japan. Symptoms of the disease were first observed in early August as wilting of plants. Fluorescence microscopy revealed the presence of resting spores in clubroot tissues and infested soil. Seeds of Chinese cabbage, broccoli, cabbage and komatsuna (Brassica campestris L., rapifera group) were grown in infested soil, then all these plants were infected with P. brassicae and developed clubroot. This is the first report concerning the incidence of clubroot of Japanese radish in Fukushima.
