In this study, we investigated whether larvae of Carposina sasakii, which is a quarantine pest, remain in the apples of the late cultivar 'Fuji' during harvest in mid-November. Fourteen percent of the infested fruits contained one or two larvae, 82% of which were 5th instar and 18% were 4th instar. Because the demand for apples from Japan is greatest in February in the Taiwanese market, most harvested apples are kept in cold storage for approximately two months before export. This period of cold treatment is sufficient to kill C. sasakii larvae in the apples. However, harvesting in an earlier season (i.e., early cultivars) or a shorter period of cold treatment may increase the risk of accidentally shipping apples that contain live larvae.
