The purpose of this paper is to clarify whether an "awareness to characters" actually results from the teaching method that incorporates the feature of the Kana characters education theory called the "word method." Toward this purpose, the teaching method proposed by Nobuo Ishimori as well as the one proposed by Saburo Masuda were examined, as both these methods aimed to foster a child's "awareness to characters." The "word method" adopted by Ishimori was a teaching method that involved noticing the following three points. (1) The character as a medium that presents in the given scene the voice and sound that the child imagines on the basis of the related illustrations. (2) The character as a medium that presents the given situation on the basis of the child's perception of the shape of the related characters. (3) The character as a medium that still presents the meaning even if the situation related to the child's perception is detached. The "word method" adopted by Masuda was a teaching method that involved the following two points. (1) Noticing the difference in the shape of one Kana character. (2) Noticing that the content of the verbal act necessarily changes when there is a difference of even one Kana character.
