1. Root system of a mulberry-tree stand, growing in a 54-year-old plantation on well-drained sandy loam derived from alluvial deposit with gravelly subsoil, was fully investigated.
2. In regard to horizontal distribution of the root system, more of the roots were found along the furrow, northwards and southwards, where the longest root exceeded 8m, while across it they were only 3m or less.
3. Development of the root system was predominant northwards contrary to that of the tree crown.
4. Downward development of the roots was restricted by a gravel layer lying 70cm below the soil surface. Greater parts of the main roots were observed in a depth of 40 to 50cm
