The structure and thermodynamic property of the complex of partially phosphorylated poly (vinyl alcohol) (phos. -PVA) with Cu (II) ion in an aqueous solution were examined. The structures of the complexes changed with pH. Below pH 5, Cu (II) ion complexed with two phosphoric residues in phos. -PVA, taking the octahedral configuration, and in the pH region 5-8, phosphoric and hydroxyl residues, forming a mixed ligand complex. Above pH 11, the hydroxy residues at 1, 3-glycol position of phos. -PVA preferentially coordinated with Cu (II) ion. The thermodynamic parameters for the complex formation, showed that the complex was stabilized by intramolecular chelating effect.
