Polystyrene (PSt) pendant tris (2, 2′-bipyridyl) ruthenium (II) complex (PSt- (bpy) 3Ru) was synthesized by reaction of bipyridylated PSt (PSt-bpy) with cis-dichlorobis (2, 2′-bipyridyl) -ruthenium (II) (Ru (bpy) 2). The complex formation of PSt-bpy with Ru (bpy) 2 proceeded rapidly in a homogeneous solution of xylene/1-butanol mixture, with the rate faster than that of bipyridine. PSt- (bpy) 3Ru, soluble in solvents of PSt, showed photocatalytic activity in phororeduction of methylviologen (MV2+) in DMF/H2O solution using triethanolamine or ethylenediamine-N, N, N′, N′-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as reducing agent. When the mixture of PSt- (bpy) 3Ru and EDTA was put into a methanol solution of MV2+ and the solid-liquid interface was irradiated with visible light, photoinduced charge separation at the interface occurred resulting in the electron transfer from EDTA in the solid phase to MV2+ in the liquid phase. Hydrogen gas was evolved in the presence of proton and platinum catalyst in the liquid phase.
