Abstract
Star-shaped polymers having nearly the same composition as conventional paints were prepared by radical polymerization of macromonomers with 3-mercaptopropionic acid, and the sulfide linkages in the molecules were converted to sulfone by reaction with hydrogen peroxide. It was found that the star-shaped polymers were stable enough against ultraviolet radiation for use as paint resin, and the solution viscosity of the star-shaped polymer was considerably lower that of the corresponding linear polymer with the same molecular weight.
