Avifauna of Shoganji Pond or Lake Saiko, Gunma National College of Technology, was investigated from April 2007 to September 2009. More than 60 species of birds including semi-endangered species were observed on the pond. Common moorhens, black-crowned night herons and some other species were found to propagate in reed field on the pond. Twenty thousands of starlings and fifty or more egrets were observed to colonize during summer nights. Green-winged teals and some other ducks were found to arrive in September and spend the winter on the pond, and hawks were observed at the same time. The pond with its biodiversity proposes itself as a potential field for environmental studies.
