We developed a new structure for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) composed of carbon cathodes and titanium substrates used for TiO2 electrodes. Two types of carbon electrodes such as a carbon plate open with multi holes and a carbon fiber array were prepared for the cathodes. Light was arranged to go through the holes or slits to reach TiO2 layer. It was shown by simulation that conversion efficiency could exceed 3–4% in each type of the cell, which suggests these carbon materials might be promising alternatives to platinum used for the cathode.
