Laryngology is a specialized field that focuses on the intricate mechanisms controlling multiple functions, including respiration, phonation, swallowing, coughing, and sneezing. These multifunctional laryngeal movements are crucial for maintaining the laryngeal function, particularly for the treatment of voice disorders, dysphagia, and airway complications associated with laryngeal stenosis. Functional surgery, along with swallowing rehabilitation and voice therapy, plays a critical role in these treatments. The mechanisms underlying the multifunctionality of the larynx as well as the pathophysiology and therapeutic strategies for voice and swallowing disorders are not yet fully understood. Basic research and clinical practice offer excellent opportunities to enter the field of laryngology as specialists. Expanding the scope of laryngology is essential for its progress and for fostering subspecialties in otolaryngology head and neck surgery.
