The distribution, food-plant and early stages of Schistomitra funeralis BUTLER are discussed here in some detail. This species is an isolated diurnal moth endemic to Japan, and is standing now as an outlier of the Epiplemidae. The food-plant on which I found larvae is Stewartia pseudo-camellia MAXIM. (Theaceae). The larva is naked, but when alive densely covered with white waxy secretion like that of Psychostrophia (on Clethra) and Epicopeia (on Corpus). The moths fly in May to June. This species is distributed in somewhat limited areas of the interior mountains of central to western Honshu and also in an isolated habitat in Shikoku.
