Interests in of hetero-core optical fi ber sensors is increasing as an alternative sensing technology because of their attractive features that demonstrate suffi cient accuracy and cost effective performances with a simple structure and without temperature dependence by a simple light intensity measurement. Their total system performance might eventually compare to conventional electrical systems. This article introduces not only the attractive principles of this sensor but also this sensor system's practical usages that are currently devised in various full-scale field tests as both physical and chemical sensing confi gurations. Prospective applications have been realized in the following fi elds: disaster reduction and prevention, medical care and life support, and liquid and hydrogen gas detection by Surface Plasmon Resonance.
