This paper reviews our activities on multicore fi bers for extremely large capacity transmission. First, we presented the multicore fiber features with a one-ring structure that was used in a transmission experiment that realized record capacity of 1.01 Pb/s/fi ber. Multicore fi bers with a one-ring structure can overcome three problems with hexagonal close-packed structures. Finally, we presented two approaches to enlarge the core multiplicity. A quasi-homogeneous Aeff heterogeneous multicore fi ber realizes bend insensitivity and very small crosstalk. A few mode multicore fi bers might drastically enlarge the core multiplicity.
