The tensile strengths of copper and iron filaments produced by the method of glass coated melt spinning are studied at various winding speeds. The diameter of the filament decreases with increasing speed of winding. In spite of a scatter, there is a size effect on the strength of the filaments. The tensile strength increases and the elongation decreases, as the diameter decreases. For example, the copper filament of 2.5μ diameter has a tensile strength of 150 kg/mm2 and an elongation of 2% and 277 kg/mm2, 1% for iron filament of 4.5μ. By annealing treatment of copper filament, the tensile strength decreases and the elongation increases. The remarkable yield point is observed after an elongation of about 1% in the iron filament spun at a high winding speed.
