Abstract
Membrane studies have long been an active field in Finland, and has many prominent researchers. There, I studied lipid–protein interactions using biophysical techniques. I have utilized liposomes and giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) to investigate the biophysical properties of actin–regulatory proteins and membrane curvature sensing/generating BAR domain proteins, such as membrane binding affinities and modes, lateral diffusion and association/dissociation dynamics on the membranes, and their physiological relevancies in cells. During my stay at the University of Helsinki, I collaborated with many researchers in Finland and other European countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. Communicating in English is fine in Finland due to the high–quality education system. Gender balance is well–considered in Finland. The Finnish, including PIs, are friendly and open–minded to the discussion. Here, I would like to introduce my study and life experience in Helsinki. I hope this will be helpful for young researchers who are considering studying abroad in the future.
