There were no significant differences in trap catches of German Cockroaches starved for 24 hours between one sticky trap with baiting food on it and another without, when the two traps were placed side by side in an arena with or without rearing food near the traps. The traps with the bait caught 1.9 times as many males, and 1.7 times as many females, as did the trap with no bait, when cockroaches had been starved for 3 days and were used without rearing food in the arena, though the significance was still less than 90%. When the two traps were placed 15 cm apart from each other and rearing food was removed, the trap with the bait caught 2.75 times as many males and 4.5 times as many females, as did the non-bait trap, without pre-starvation of cockroaches, the differences between the baited trap and the non-bait trap being significant. The rates were 3 and 4.5 for males and females, respectively, when cockroaches had been starved for 3 days, and the differences between the baited trap and non-bait trap were highly significant. German cockroaches might be attracted by food bait, not to its pinpoint location but into a range of odorous space around it, and they might make oriented movement to the odorous range over a distance of at least 15 cm.
