In this paper, we present a new method of building a fundamental orthogonal fluxgate magnetometer by using a simple switched capacitor phase-sensitive detector (PSD), in order to accomplish low power consumption and miniaturization. A PSD is one of the most important components of the fluxgate magnetometer electronics. We made a switched capacitor PSD with an LT1043 IC which has a dual switched-capacitor building block, and built it into the fluxgate magnetometer electronics. We also constructed a sensor head with an amorphous wire. Experimental results show that the power consumption of the proposed method is as low as 75 mW with a power supply of ±3 V, and the resolution of the sensor is 27 pT/√Hz. The proposed method uses only three small-scale ICs, which enable us to miniaturize the flux magnetometers.
