Alminium substituted tobermorite which is one of cation-exchangers of layered calcium silicate type was synthesized hydrothermally from CaO, SiO2, Al (NO3) 3 and NaOH under saturated steam pressure at 175°C. The cation exchange characteristics of the tobermorite to silver (I) ion has been investigated in aqueous solution at 25°C. It was found that at the silver initial conceritration below 10.0mM, silver ions were exchanged for the interlayer calcium ion of the tobermorite, but at beyond 16.0mM silver ions were exchanged for both calcium ions in the inter-and intra-calcium ions, resulting in the destraction of the structure of tobermorite. Tobermorites with different silver contents were prepared and tested on their antibacterial activities for Eschericia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptoverticillium reculum. All the tobermorites tested exhibited effective antibacterial activities.
