A total of 1147 soil samples were collected from 22 Prefectures in Japan. In 673 of these samples (59%), A, fumigates was found. A higher distribution occurred in samples collected from paddy fields (69-100%) and vegetable field (36-100%), while a comparatively lower distribution was found in samples from forest (5-74%), grassland (5-82%) and orchard (23-100%). In order to assess their ability of the production of fumitremorgins A and B (FTA, FTB), 90 isolates of A, fumigatus, from soil at 9 Prefectures were used. As a result, 89 strains were found to produce FTB but only one strain out of the total was found to be positive for FTA production.
