As part of Gifu University’s adoption of the Center of Community (COC) Project and COC+ Project sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the university is partnering with local municipalities and devoting itself entirely to the promotion of community-oriented education, research, and social engagements geared towards the cultivation of a new generation of community leaders able to play an active role in local revitalization. In doing so, Gifu University is working to reimagine itself at the core of regional revitalization, aiming to strengthen its function as a core presence in the community as an institution that brings together information, technologies, and a variety of personnel that will contribute to finding solutions to local challenges. In this paper, after outlining and investigating these initiatives at Gifu University, I elaborate on the role of the university in local revitalization.
