With analyzing and consideration of questionnaire and interviewal investigation on how social education for third grader be carried out, and on what the teachers think of the way to do the class, the author gets following consequences.
The state of the class in third year children consists of five tendencies. (I) As a teaching materials, textbook, sub-textbook and warkbook published for all elementary school in Kagawa by teachers' council are mainly used, so the frequency of using materials made by teacher's own idea becomes low. (II) Annual teaching plan is formed mostly according to an example course of study in authorized textbook or guide line by Prefectural Board of Education. As a result, school' s identity is hardly shown. (III) Children's accomplishment is evaluated by tests in the workbook, and weight of tests through teacher's eyes is light. (IV) Most of school hold field work class for twice to four times in the year but view point to nourish children' s observation ability is little. (V) Teaching material on community area is made by group of teachers who are in charged of same school year and teachers who have its class. But there are a lot of problems in the way of making, management and using.
On the other focus, that is teacher' s mind, the author finds four points. (I) A lot of reseachers feel that class for third grader is difficult to teach. (II) On the cotrary also a lot of teachers feel that children' s interest in social studies is would rather high. (III) Many teacher answer that this “gap” (it means that children have high interests but teacher could not well develop it and feel that doing class of community area is difficult) results in the lack of their own ability to make teaching materials on the community and the difficulty to bring up children' s thinking power. (IV) Teachers eagerly insist the necessity of training to understand material itself rather than that to improve teaching technique, in order to complement their ability.
From the above, it could be pointed that teacher' s mind is closely related with the state of his class. For an improvement of third grader's social studies to more attractive one for children's it is necessary to revise the curriculum and improve teacher training methods.
