This study examines the spatial structure of fisheries at and around Haedomari Sub-Fishing Port which is a part of Shimonoseki Fishing Port. The spatial structure of fisheries, shown by Shinohara (1994), are composed of the fishing space, the fish landing processing space and the fish market space. Shinohara (1994) built the model of the spatial structure of fisheries derived from studies on fishing ports where cheap and large quantity of fish are landed. This study attempts to make the model of the spatial structure of fisheries at and around Haedomari Sub-Fishing Port, which is characterized by its dependence on puffer which is expensive fish and landed so few in number. The results are summarised as follows;
Haedomari Sub-Fishing Port is the largest port for the landed quantity of puffer in Japan. This port has developed as a specialized port for puffer since 1974, when the puffer section of Shimonoseki Karato Fish Market removed. In 1995, the landed amount of puffer at Haedomari Sub-Fishing Port accounted for only 2% in quantity at Shimonoseki Fishing Port, but 16% of all in terms of fish sales. The landed puffer in this port are composed of natural and aquacultural ones. The landed quantity of latter had increased recently and accounted for about 60% of all in 1995.
The fishing space and the fish landing processing space are combined through the Haedomari Sub-Fishing Port and Fishing Port Market. The fishing landing processing space and the fish market space are combined through the activity of broking-wholesaling industries concerned in puffer. Many sorts of industries treated puffer specially are clustered at Haedomari Sub-Fishing Port. Now, Haedomari Sub-Fishing Port became the most famous port treated puffer in Japan. Because puffer are so expensively bought and sold at Haedomari Fishing Port Market, many fisher-men and aqaculturists send and sell puffer to this port mainly from the west part of Japan. Therefore, aquacultural industry is one of important elements in the spatial structure of fisheries at and around Haedomari Sub-Fishing Port. That cha-racteristic is different from Shinohara's model, and cause originality of this study.
