High definition television (also known as HD-TV or HIVISION) is a new TV system developed through research efforts at NHK over the past 15 years. The information capacity transmitted by the new TV image is over five times that of the conventional TV systems, and its image quality is superior to that of 35mm cinematography. The new system has great potential for applications in the electronic imagings, such as videoprinting, video-hardcopy and video-cinematography. This paper introduces the HD-TV system and its promissing applications for the graphic arts engineering.
